Ralston Music Department Disneyland Trip - Changes for Spring of 2018

Ralston music families,

The next Disneyland trip is tentatively scheduled for spring of the 2017-2018 school year.  Due to continued increasing enrollment in music classes, the number of students going on the trip has grown every year, and has become difficult to manage.  When the tradition of this trip began many years ago, there was one band class on one bus.  Last year, 250+ students from 6 different classes went on 6 (almost 7) buses.  Below is a list of some prohibitive factors of such a high number:

1. Student safety and staff liability

2. Manageability of moving large groups of students to various destinations

3. Excessive workload on volunteer planners and chaperones

4. Organizing and logistics

5. Compromised ensembles from combining classes with minimal rehearsal time together.  Both bands, both orchestras and both choirs were combined to some degree for last year’s trip.

6. Limitations at Disneyland of the size/number of groups that can be accommodated. Because of the size of our group and number of ensembles, Disneyland was unable to accommodate in-park performances on our last trip.

7. Difficulty of staff overseeing/accounting for/locating students

The music teachers, with the understanding and support of Principal Michael Dougherty, have determined that the number of students participating in the trip must be limited.  It has been decided that students from the 3 advanced groups will be eligible: Honors Band, Chamber Orchestra and Chamber Choir.  All students will have the opportunity to be accepted into these groups next spring by audition, and by having demonstrated good behavior, attitude and participation in class.  The result will be a manageable contingent which will well represent Ralston Music at Disneyland.

We understand the disappointment that will be experienced by some families due to this arrangement.  If you have any questions, please direct them to the music teachers. We appreciate your understanding of why this change is necessary.
